God Is With You In Everything You Do

Genesis 21:22-34 and Psalm 81:1-7 (NIV)

These 8 words in Gen 21:22 spoke to me – “God is with you in everything you do.”
OBSERVE:
On first reading, Gen 21:22-34 did not seem as exciting as the “big events” such as the creation story in Gen 1-2, the fall of man in Gen 3, the great flood in Gen 6-9, the Tower of Babel in Gen 11 and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Gen 19. But after reading these verses several times, I was able to glean valuable insights into the life of Abraham.
APPLY:
In v22, Abimelek said these words to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do”. Even though Abimelek was a pagan king, he could see God’s hand in Abraham’s life. In other words, Abraham’s life had become a visible testimony of God’s presence. In the preceding chapters, we learnt that even though Abraham had his shortcomings, his life pointed to God’s faithfulness. Abraham lived a life that was consistently and distinctly set apart for God.
When others look at me, do they see God in my life? Am I living a life of holiness, integrity and consistency in Christ?
As I read from v25 onwards, I was amazed how Abraham dealt with the conflict with Abimelek. Even though Abraham had every reason to defend his rights, he chose to trust God’s faithfulness by seeking peace and showing integrity. After the issue was resolved, the first thing that Abraham did was to plant a tamarisk tree to worship the eternal God (v33).
When resolving conflicts, my approach is to stand my ground and assert my rights, before eventually finding a compromise. I should learn from Abraham whose confidence in God freed him from the need to control every outcome.
DO:
1. I will live a life where my words and deeds point others to Jesus.
2. I will learn to trust God by pursuing peace when resolving conflicts.
PRAY:
Lord, You are the potter and I am the clay. Shape my life to be a testimony of Your presence. Teach me to walk in integrity and give me courage to pursue peace. May others see You through me, Amen.
