Do Not Delay When Obedience Matters

BRD REFLECTION 2026

Genesis 19:14-38 and Psalm 79:9-13 (NIV)

(Monica Yan, Strangely Warmed Retreat Committee)

READ:

Genesis 19:14-38 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Reading Genesis 19:14-38, I envision the angels telling Lot to leave the city immediately with his family as God is about to destroy the place; Lot and family lingered, hesitated and even thought the angels were joking! I wonder what went through his mind at that point in time, to hesitate to leave the place despite impending danger; it could be the familiarity of the place, the comfort or the fear of the unknown.

Lot’s wife looked back despite being told by the angels not to look back and she was turned into a pillar of salt.  This reminds me that God’s instruction is not to be taken lightly, to follow as He has instructed.

Lot’s daughters committed the carnal sin of intoxicating their father, to sleep with him so as to carry on the family line.  They did not seem to think there was anything wrong with what they were doing.  This could be due to them growing up in a land filled with sins and lack of moral guidance.  This shows the power of environment in moulding our values and thinking.

APPLY:

God’s commandments are to be taken seriously and without hesitation as God is intolerant towards sin.

The environment has a great influence on us and we live in a society where God’s standards are not always observed. Hence, the need to read the Word and be reminded of His commandments.

DO:

I need to practise Examen – to reflect and see my day through God’s lens, if I had committed any sins knowingly or unknowingly; and seek His forgiveness.

I will let Small Group and DISCIPLE classes help me to deepen my understanding of the Bible. I will surround myself with God-fearing friends and be accountable to each other in our walk with God.

I am to speak up when I encounter wrong within my family, as sins can be like the boiling frog scenario where one can get desensitised and soon, feel nothing wrong with it.

PRAY:

Dear God, thank You for giving us Your commandments to guide us to live right with You.  Open my eyes on areas that I have not been sensitive to, please shed light and forgive me on these areas.  God, I want to live right with You; please guide me, cause my spirit to be sensitive to Your prompting and have the courage to act upon it.  In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
