Matthew 13:44-46 and Psalm 55:16-23 (NIV)
(Debbie Lee Lodge, Youth Ministry)
READ:
Psalm 55:16-23 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
This is one of the most emotional psalms of King David, who was facing an intense sense of betrayal by someone he trusted. It was probably written in the midst of political turmoil. The earlier part of the psalm expresses his distress, fear, anxiety, and desire to escape from the situation he was in.
This passage reminds me that:
1. Verse 19 says, “God is enthroned forever.” God is in control of every situation in my past, present, and future.
2. Verses 16 and 17 say, “…he hears my voice… and the LORD saves me.” He responds to my cry for help at any time of the day and delivers me.
3. Verse 18 (NASB) says, “He will redeem my soul in peace.” He gives me the peace that transcends all understanding despite difficult circumstances.
4. Verse 22 says, “He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.” He gives me the strength to endure, for He is a faithful God.
APPLY:
1. Like the psalmist, I can pour out my raw feelings to God and know that He understands, because Isaiah 53:3 says, “He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.”
2. I can rest assured that He is still in control, as He knows the situations of betrayal that I have experienced. He is able to deliver me according to His will and timing.
3. Above all, His peace and faithfulness in my life are what make life on this side of heaven so meaningful and joyful.
DO:
1. Pray that I will remain authentic and faithful in my relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ and be a trusted friend in my faith community.
2. Pray for God’s grace to obey Him and live righteously.
3. Continue to trust God as I make this journey with my hand safely in His.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, please help me to cast my burdens on You, not depending on my own strength to deal with them, but trusting that You care and are in control. Let obedience to You define who I am.
