SUMMARY l Genesis 24 records how God advanced His redemption plan through a journey, a well, a conversation and a marriage. Because God’s sovereignty goes before His people, we can obey Him in faith while His sanctifying grace shapes us along the journey.
A. God Goes Before Our Mission (V1-9)
The story which unfolds as Abraham finding a wife for his son Isaac is actually part of God’s redemption plan. The covenant promise rests on Isaac if the covenant line leading to Christ is to continue. A family story becomes a salvation story and a private matter is part of God’s global mission. The servant in the story is Abraham’s most trusted servant. God’s sanctifying work shapes not only a family but a holy people.
Abraham’s confidence that God would send His angel before his servant is built through years of following God. He acted in faith to send his servant, showing that faith is active which is God’s sanctifying work. Just as advance parties make preparations before mission teams arrive, God is our advance party. We do not need to worry about tomorrow (Mt 6:35) as Jesus goes ahead of tomorrow. This truth does not remove our challenges but transforms our view of who God is.
B. God Goes Before Our Prayers (V10-27)
The servant arrives with no contacts or guidance but he prayed despite being told that God would send His angel before him. Before he finished praying, Rebekah appeared and her response to his request for a drink showed God was already preparing His answer long before he prayed. Rebekah demonstrated extraordinary generosity, diligence and hospitality as God prepared her and knew her before the servant met her. God prepares a person privately before using him publicly. Prayer awakens us to what God is doing.
What are you going through this season? God may be preparing you for something, eg developing patience before leadership, humility before influence. God’s delays are not denials. His hidden work is God’s sanctifying grace at work.
The servant recognised God’s leading hands (V26).
C. God Goes Before Our Decisions(V28-33)
The servant puts God’s mission before personal comfort (V33). He testifies to Rebekah’s family God’s divine providence and faithfulness (V34-38) and asks Laban and Bethuel to make a decision (V49). God’s providence is seen by others (V50,51). The servant’s mission has succeeded through God’s guidance, provision and preparation but Rebekah has yet to respond.
Though she does not have details and knowledge of what lies ahead, like Abraham, Rebekah chooses to leave the familiar and go with the servant. She has no guarantee except the promise of God.
Faith does not understand everything but trusts the One who does. We are called to leave behind everything and follow Jesus. We prefer God’s guarantee to show us before we obey but God says to obey and discover His faithfulness. Every step of our faith journey requires trust. God’s sovereignty guides our journey, His grace transforms us and that is sanctification.
D. God Goes Before Our Future (V62-67)
Isaac waited as Rebekah made the long journey to him. Abraham waited for Isaac, Rebekah travelled to unknown future. God worked through every stage to bring about His purpose. God’s provision often unfolds through waiting.
Both Isaac and Rebekah looked up and saw. Isaac saw the camels approaching and Rebekah saw Isaac. Their two lives were prepared separately and providentially by God to meet according to God’s perfect timing. God cares about relationships. He uses people to shape us and relationships to sanctify us.
Genesis 24 points beyond Isaac to Jesus. Jesus is the beloved Son of God, Isaac is the son of Abraham. Isaac carried the promise of God that Jesus fulfilled. Isaac received his bride, Jesus came to redeem His bride (the church). Abraham sent his servant to seek a bride for Isaac, Jesus came to seek and save sinners.
Before we know God, God knows us. Before we seek God, God seeks us. Before we love God, God loves us.

The God who went before Abraham, his servant, Isaac and Rebekah is the same God with us. May the fear of the unknown not cripple us. Trust God who will never forsake us as God calls and goes ahead before us.
