Summary:

Paul ends the book of Romans with a commendation, a warning and a promise.

1. Commendation (Romans 16:1-16;21-23)

Paul uses this chapter to affirm and appreciate many people in Rome. He also includes greetings from those he is with. This chapter paints a picture of a diverse but united church.

Diversity

  1. House churches. The church in Rome during Paul’s time was made up of five groups, meeting in different homes: Priscilla and Aquila (vs 4,5); Aristobulus (vs 10); Narcissus (vs 11); Asyncritus and others (vs 14); Philologus and others (vs 15). Together, they formed a small church in Rome. In our church, there are hundreds of small groups. Each is a gathering of the people of God.
  2. Women. Paul highlights the importance of the ministry of women. Several women are mentioned: Phoebe, a deacon and benefactor who used her wealth to bless the poor and needy; Priscilla; Mary, Tryphena and Tryphosa; Rufus’ mother; Junia, who taught and instructed God’s people.
  3. Different backgrounds and varied gifts: the commendations went to Jews and Gentiles; to businesswomen (Phoebe); to public servants (Erastus); to scribes (Tertius); and to those with gifts of care (Rufus’ mother) and hospitality (Gaius).

 Unity

There is a role and place for everyone. Even though each is different from the other, there is unity.

Paul’s references to “in Christ” (vs 3,7,9,19); “in the Lord” (vs 8,11,12,13); “beloved” (vs 5,8,9,12); “fellow sufferers” (vs 4,7); “fellow workers” (vs 3,9) illustrate that there is no such thing as a solo Christian. We are united in Christ and part of a spiritual family. Even if we do not agree on all issues, we are children of God and joint heirs in Christ.

Discipleship lesson 1

Serve our purpose in community in God’s mission. Do our part in wherever God has placed us. Know our purpose by obeying our calling and assignment. In whatever role we are called to, and in whatever season of assignment we are in, let us not do it alone. Serve together in community!

2. Warning (Romans 16:17-20)

Paul warns us to keep away from false teachers who may lure us away from the truth. Let us be discerning in our obedience. Be wise about what is good – love and follow what is good. Be innocent about what is evil. JB Philips phrases Romans 16:19 this way: “I want to see you experts in good, and not even beginners in evil.”

Discipleship lesson 2

Obey the Truth with the power of God. We have learnt much through the Romans sermon series but obedience cannot be on our own strength. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (v20) is a reminder that we are involved in a spiritual warfare. It is not a matter of cognitive obedience. We need God’s grace to obey. Take intentional steps in discipleship, for we live in perilous times.

3.Promise (Romans 16:25-27)

Discipleship lesson 3

Trust God who establishes you with His gospel. God establishes/strengthens us in faith against error, in holiness against temptation and with courage against persecution. As we obey His command to share the gospel, know that it is He who establishes us. Let us ask God to show us how we can be involved in His work.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

PONDER | REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. If you were to write a letter or email to the church, who would you commend? Who are your companions in Christ and friends in ministry? Name at least three.
  2. What do you observe about the diversity of the people Paul greeted and commended? What does that tell us about the nature of God’s ministry?
  3. How can you serve your purpose in the mission of God? What is one kingdom assignment God is calling you to accomplish?
  4. “Be wise in what is good and innocent of evil.”(verse 19). What does that mean for you? Share an example.
  5. Why is it important to turn to God’s power for true discerning obedience of His Word?
  6. How does the fact that it is God who establishes us with His gospel encourage you?
  7. How does Paul show that God is the only wise one (verse 27)? If God is the only wise one, what wisdom do you need today?
  8. How can you turn to God today to put your trust in Him? What areas in your life is He calling you to a deeper surrender and obedience? Pray for each other to take the next step of intentional discipleship.
