Words Matter To God
BRD REFLECTION 2025
Ecclesiastes 5 and Psalm 149 (NIV)

READ:
Ecclesiastes 5 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
In Ecclesiastes 5, Solomon offers a sobering reminder about our words and our relationship with God. He warns against speaking thoughtlessly or making vows we cannot keep. Words matter to God, especially when spoken in His presence. Solomon also reminds us that the pursuit of wealth is ultimately unsatisfying; only in recognising God as the giver of all things can we find true contentment. Joy that lasts flows not from possessions, but from a life rooted in reverent relationship with Him.
APPLY:
Ecclesiastes 5:6-7 “ Don’t let your mouth make you sin. … Fear God instead.”. These verses prompted me to reflect on how my speech reflects my worship of God, who desires a genuine and authentic relationship with me. Throughout Scripture, we see that God is faithful to His promises. In Genesis, He kept His word to Abraham when Sarah conceived in her old age, just as He had said. The God who is sovereign and trustworthy models truth in both word and deed. As someone who depends on His grace and mercy, I too am called to be truthful and sincere, especially in the promises I make to Him. For example, when I confess my sins and seek forgiveness, I must follow through with integrity and action. Empty promises or careless words grieve God and damage the relationship I cherish with Him. I will remain faithful in my commitments and remain open to His correction and guidance.
“Fear God” is a reminder that reverence is foundational to discipleship. To fear God is not to cower in terror but to stand in awe of His holiness, to regard Him with deep respect, and to allow that reverence to shape both my words and my actions. It should ultimately be fulfilled in my relationship with Jesus, who reveals the fullness of God’s holiness and grace. True reverence leads to obedience rooted in love for God and for others. In Him, I see the embodiment of faithfulness and truth, and through Him, I am called into a life of authentic worship.
DO:
I desire a meaningful spiritual communication with God. My speech should reflect the sincerity of a heart aligned with Him, a life that is marked not by many words, but by faithful living. Before making any promises, I will pause to reflect and ensure that my words align with my heart and values.
PRAY:
Lord, help me to pause before I speak, to weigh my words with reverence. Place in me a heart that fears You, not out of fear of punishment, but in awe of Your holiness. Let my speech and actions reflect a life that truly worships You. Amen.
