Genesis 40 & Psalm 38 (NIV)

(Chow Yuen Peng, PTM, Pastoral Care; Girls’ Brigade)

READ:

Genesis 40 & Psalm 38 (NIV)

The following verses caught my attention:

Genesis 40 :

V6 & 7: When Joseph came to them the next morning he saw that they were dejected.  So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so sad today?”

V8: We both had dreams,” they answered. “but there is no one to interpret them.”  Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God?” Tell me your dreams.”

V23: The chief cupbearer, however did not remember Joseph; he forgot him”

OBSERVE:

Joseph was observant and showed concern for the cupbearer and the baker.   He displayed sensitivity and empathy towards others despite his plight and imprisonment. Joseph continued to trust God and did not display any anger or disappointment. Through all his challenges, he lived in communion with God. Joseph acknowledged it was God who enabled him to interpret the dreams of the cupbearer and baker.  Joseph interpreted and spoke honestly to them regardless of good or bad news.  He presented the truth as it was from God and accorded all glory to God.  He did not lean on his own strength or talent but acknowledged God’s perfection.

His hope for freedom was shattered when the cupbearer forgot his promise to Joseph, after he was pardoned by Pharaoh.  Joseph was once again betrayed. But he had a promise from God and he remained faithful without bitterness or resentment.  He remained calm and faithful because he knew God was with Him amid injustice and suffering.

APPLY:

I have my fair share of disappointments and injustices. This is a timely reminder for me to:

i) Emulate Joseph’s excellent attitude and posture as a disciple. To persevere, trust and continue to have faith in God, regardless of challenging moments.

ii) Experience God’s presence always. Be like Joseph, remain confident and positive during trials and suffering.

iii) Be bold and faithful and be God’s messenger for salvation and reconciliation.

DO:

I shall aspire to do my daily reading and examen, and to be rested in Him.  Seeking God to take captive my thoughts and my whole being.  This song “Before You I Kneel (A Worker’s Prayer)” by Keith & Kristyn Getty is one of my favourites and I have made this my daily prayer for this season.

PRAY:

Dear Abba Father,

Before You I kneel, my Master and Maker;

Establish the work of my hands.

And order my steps to seek first your kingdom in every small and great task.

May I live the gospel of Your grace, serve Your purpose in my fleeting days.

May my life bring eternal praise and glory to Your great name.

Amen.
