Lifting Myself Or Lifting Him
BRD REFLECTIONS:
2 Samuel 15:1-37 and Psalm 71:14-24 (NIV)
(Pauline Tan, PTM, Counselling)
READ:
For this devotion, I look at the contrast of themes between Absalom trying to steal the hearts of the people in 2 Samuel 15 and David’s worship in Psalm 71.
OBSERVE:
Last year, I read a book about “Givers” in the corporate world having good track records at being successful. The author broke down the communication patterns of such “Givers” as showing vulnerability and focusing on common goals. “Givers” stand to gain trust, goodwill and long-term benefits. Initially, I felt drawn to this style of communication as the premise of these “Givers” receiving reward was appealing. However, I could not shake the uneasy feeling that something was not right if I chose this communication style intentionally in an attempt to further my personal agenda. Absalom was a smooth talker indeed. He took time and effort to “listen”. He expressed outward empathy and connection. But his goal was to steal the hearts of the Israelites so he could gain an advantage. Absalom was using his communication skills to control the outcome and to lift himself up.
This is in contrast to David’s cry in Psalm 71. What was on his lips was God’s works in his life – His mighty acts, His righteousness, His comfort, His restoration and His deliverance. It was an act of worship, of love and complete submission. If I was there watching David worship, I wonder if my heart would be stirred to want to find what David had found. David, the man after God’s heart, was using his communication to lift God up.
APPLY:
Reflecting on these verses has made me aware of my hidden intentions that may steer my focus away from my purpose of lifting God up in my life. When I am nice, do I do that to endear myself to others and to gain advantage? Even when I do, how can I compassionately grow towards a David-like posture of worship.
DO:
I can reflect more thoughtfully on my interactions with others and allow the Holy Spirit to prompt me of my undesirable intentions.
PRAY:
Father God, thank You for Your word. It searches my heart, even as I feel Your love and acceptance. Help me to turn my words and countenance towards You and release my fear of not gaining advantage.
Holy Spirit, gently prompt me to redirect my inclinations to your purpose – my life as a worship to You.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
