Grace That Remembers When We Forget

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Proverbs 6:1-35; 7:1-27 and Psalm 106 (NIV)

(Joni Ong from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

His word to me this season: Psalm 106 (NIV)

Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever… (v.1)
But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold… (v.13)
Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his mighty power known… (v.8)
Save us, Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name.” (v.47)

OBSERVE:

As I read this psalm, I was struck by how it lays out the history of Israel – not as a proud highlight reel, but as an honest account of failure, forgetfulness, and God’s persistent mercy. The psalmist was not shy about the people’s disobedience. They forgot. They rebelled. They worshipped idols. And yet… God saved them.

It is not a flattering picture of humanity, but it is a beautiful testimony of God’s enduring grace. Again and again, even when the people turned away, God drew them back. His love never gave up.

APPLY:

Reading this, I have to admit – this isn’t just Israel’s story. It’s mine too.

There have been times I’ve seen God’s hand clearly – answered prayers, divine help, unexplainable peace. But not long after, I’ve found myself anxious again, doubting, or trying to take control when things don’t go according to my timeline.

Psalm 106 convicts me because it reminds me how easy it is to forget. To stop waiting on God. To let impatience or fear make me drift. But it also encourages me deeply – because God doesn’t give up on forgetful people. His love isn’t fragile or fickle. His grace is not based on my dismal record but on His nature.

As a Methodist, I’m reminded of God’s prevenient grace that goes before me, seeking me even when I wander. And I hear an invitation to return again, to trust again, to remember. Remember His faithfulness. Remember His mercy. Remember that I am part of a people He has redeemed, and that I’m called not just to receive grace but to reflect it.

So I ask myself:

  • What have I forgotten that I need to remember?
  • Where do I need to be still and wait for His plan to unfold?
  • Who can I remind today of God’s faithful love?

DO:

  • Pause and remember: I want to start each day this week by recalling one thing God has done for me – big or small.
  • Write it down: I’ll keep a “God’s faithfulness” list so I have a record to turn to when doubt or fear creeps in.
  • Share a testimony: I’ll look for an opportunity this week to share how God has been faithful – maybe with a friend, or even in my small group.

PRAY:

Lord God, You are good, and Your love endures forever. Forgive me for the times when I have forgotten Your faithfulness, for the moments I have rushed ahead instead of waiting for Your plan. Thank you for Your mercy that never runs out, for saving me – not because I deserve it, but because of who You are. Help me to remember to return to You and to rest in Your grace. May my life be a song of thanks, and may my heart stay anchored in Your love. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
