Going After His Heart Before His Gifts
BRD REFLECTION 2026
1 Corinthians 14:1-12 and Psalm 22:9-15 (NIV)

READ:
1 Corinthians 14:1-12 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Verse 12 stands out to me: spiritual gifts are given not for personal gain, but to build up the church.
“So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.”
The Corinthian church treated speaking in tongues as a source of pride and status. Ironically, this obsession led to immaturity and division rather than growth. This reminds me that even committed followers of Christ can lose sight of the true purpose of spiritual gifts.
APPLY:
A few years ago, I heard testimonies from an ex-colleague about how her church friends prophesied and clearly heard from God. Having mostly encountered God through quiet moments in worship and His Word, I became intrigued and began seeking the gift of prophecy.
Later, I also asked God for the gift of speaking in tongues, hoping for a deeper and more personal encounter with Him. I saw these gifts as something special that set believers apart.
While I don’t think I received either gift, God answered different prayers instead—teaching me to see people through His eyes and align my heart with His. Occasionally, I still think it would be amazing to confidently speak into someone’s life through prophecy, but I trust His wisdom in what He gives.
DO:
This passage reminds me to pursue God Himself and to love His church as the ultimate goal. God equips each part of the body with what is needed to fulfill His will. I must guard my heart against pride and resist taking credit for the work He does through me. It is important to give Him all the glory and remain accountable to trusted spiritual friends who can lovingly correct me when pride creeps in.
PRAY:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for the times I make things be about myself. Deliver me from pride and temptation. Continue to grow my love and faith in You, trusting that You will equip me for the work of Your church. Help me celebrate others’ gifts without envy, as one body in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
