A Future Awaits Those Who Seek God’s Peace

BRD REFLECTIONS

Genesis 39 and Psalm 37 (NIV)

(Esther Gooi, Steward, LCEC)

READ:

Genesis 39 and Psalm 37 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Genesis 39 describes Joseph’s life after he was sold as a slave to Potiphar the Egyptian. Joseph was conscious not to sin against God, and he prospered in Potiphar’s household. After Potiphar’s wife maligned him, causing him to be imprisoned the Lord was still with Joseph. Once again, Joseph found favour with the prison warden. Joseph always behaved honourably and this pleased God, and “the Lord was with him and gave him success in whatever he did.” (v3, v23)

Psalm 37 asks us to wait on and submit to the Lord. This is especially when the wicked seem to be getting their way. We are told to be still (v7) and refrain from anger (v8), for in “a little while, and the wicked will be no more” (v10). Even though the wicked plot against the righteous, we have assurance that the Lord will not forsake his faithful ones (v28).

My take-away from Genesis 39 and Psalm 37 is in Psalm 37:37: “Consider the blameless, observe the upright; a future awaits those who seek peace.”

APPLY:

As Christians living in a secular world, there will be times when we feel overwhelmed by circumstances such as office politics, souring relationships with loved ones, financial losses from investments.

Today’s readings remind me to always behave in a blameless and upright manner like Joseph. I am to remember God is my stronghold in times of trouble. I should not sin against Him. I am reminded to “hope in the Lord and keep His way” (Psalm 37:34). To continue to keep my eyes on eternity, to seek His peace especially in difficult circumstances.

DO:

I will continue to strive to read His Word daily so that I may behave in a manner pleasing to God.

I will engage in conversations with God more intentionally. To pray, to listen, to be more sensitive and responsive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings.

I will endeavour to always seek His peace in conflict, even if the outcome is not of my desire.

PRAY:

Dear Heavenly Father, my Deliverer in whom I take refuge. You are ever faithful and worthy of my praises. Thank You for not forsaking me when I sin against you. Help me, O Lord, to manifest your word in me, to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. Holy Spirit, help me be sensitive to your promptings, so that I can honour you with my life, and be a peacemaker wherever you place me.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
