Discerning False Teaching

BRD REFLECTIONS:

2 John; 3 John and Psalm 50 (NIV)

(Jason Jong, SGM, PCZL)

READ:

As I read 2 John (ESV), the following verses stood out to me :

7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting,

11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

12 Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

OBSERVE:

1.  I enjoy watching various YouTube videos that focus on Christian messages, sermons, and teachings. However, certain verses in 2 John have warned me about deceivers and reminded me to stay vigilant against false teachings to protect my faith. Individuals spreading such misleading messages are often labelled as antichrists due to their distorted interpretations of Christ’s teachings. (Psalm 50:16)

2. Hospitality was a key virtue in the early church, and we have always been taught and encouraged to be hospitable so as to reflect the teachings of the Gospel. However, John instructs believers not to extend hospitality to those who promote false teachings (verses 10-11).

3.  In verse 12, John expressed a desire for face-to-face communication. Yet, in today’s fast-paced world of demanding schedules and constant busyness, we have become dependent on brief messages, quick communication and detached Zoom sessions as a matter of convenience.

This underscores the importance of personal relationships within the Christian community, which should not be replaced by impersonal communication, online small group meetings or church services.

APPLY:

I need to remain faithful to God’s commandments. To do this, I must commit to daily Bible reading and prayer to better understand and follow God’s teachings.

I will stay grounded and be alert to doctrines and teachings that distort the truth about Jesus Christ. It is important to test everything against Scripture and to research and memorize verses that affirm key biblical doctrines.

I aim to show kindness to others, but I will avoid supporting those who spread false teachings. I will discern who and what I endorse, evaluating any content or material I intend to share or support online.

DO:

I need to continue walking in truth and love for others, ensuring that this is reflected in my daily life. My actions matter because they demonstrate how I treat those around me. If I confess Jesus Christ is my Lord, then it’s important for me to take practical steps to show love to the people in my life.

I will press on with my daily Bible reading and reflections, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, learn to discern false teachings and messages.

PRAY:

Dear Abba Father,

Thank You for Your Word and wisdom in 2 John, which reminds me to walk in obedience to Your commandments. Help me to live a life that reflects Your truth and love to others with the same grace and compassion You have shown me.

Lord, please grant me wisdom and discernment to recognize false teachings and protect my heart and mind from anything that could lead me away from Your truth. Strengthen my faith so that I remain committed to Your teaching and stay focused on You.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, AMEN.
