BRD REFLECTION 2026

Matthew 13:53-58 and Psalm 56:7-13 (NIV)

(Yap Tsok Kee, Small Group Ministry)

READ:

I’ve been reflecting on Matthew 13:53-58 and Psalm 56:7-13. The verses that really hit home for me are Matthew 13:58-“And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith”—and Psalm 56:8, where the psalmist reminds us that God “lists my tears on your scroll.”

OBSERVE:

In Matthew, the people of Nazareth were so familiar with Jesus as “the carpenter’s son” that they missed the Messiah standing right in front of them. Their routine perspective blocked their spiritual vision. In contrast, Psalm 56 shows a God who is intimately involved in our struggles. He doesn’t just observe from a distance; He is a God who is “for me,” keeping a careful record of my pain and providing a foundation for a faith that doesn’t waver, even when fear creeps in.

APPLY:

Reading the Matthew passage, I’m convicted by how often I attend church out of routine. I have to ask myself: Is my faith diminishing because I’ve treated Sunday worship as just another habit? Like the people in Nazareth, I’ve often failed to truly see Jesus because I’ve become too “familiar” with the ritual. Psalm 56 felt like a timely wake-up call. It reminded me that steadfast faith isn’t about going through the motions; it’s about raw, honest reliance on God in my hardest moments. It’s a reminder that He is looking for a heart that trusts Him, not just for a person sitting in a pew.

DO:

I want to move past “routine” and move back into a real relationship with Him.

·  Intentional Worship: Before I walk into church this Sunday, I’m going to spend five minutes in the car asking God to “break the routine” and help me see Jesus clearly in the service.

·  Honesty in Prayer: Instead of “polite” prayers, I’m going to start being as honest as the psalmist—telling God exactly where I’m struggling and trusting that He is already recording those tears.

PRAY:

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve let my worship become a chore or a habit. I don’t want to be like those in Nazareth who missed Your power because of their own expectations. Thank You for the reminder that You are for me and that You value every tear I shed. Help me to trade my routine for a steadfast, living faith that expects to see You move. Amen.
