BRD REFLECTION 2025

Proverbs 4:1-27 and Psalms 104 (NIV)

(Shannon Loh from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

For this devotion, I will focus on Psalm 104.

OBSERVE:

Psalm 104 is a poetic and reverent meditation on God as the creator and sustainer of all things. It mirrors the creation passage in Genesis, highlighting the order and harmony of creation. It opens with praise “Bless the Lord, O my soul,” then unfolds into a description of God’s power over the world.

The psalmist depicts God as clothed in light (v2), stretching out the heavens like a tent, laying the beams of His chambers on the waters, emphasizing God’s involvement in creation.

From the foundations of the earth (v5) to the springs and mountains (v10-13), to the provision for animals and humans alike (v14-23), the psalm presents creation as a divinely designed and sustained system. The cycles of water, vegetation, light, and darkness reflect God’s sovereignty.

Even the sea creatures, including the great Leviathan (v26), are portrayed as part of God’s sovereign rule. The psalm ends with praise, recognizing that all life depends on God: “When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground” (v30).

Ultimately, Psalm 104 is a doxology. When I observe creation, I respond in worship, recognizing God’s care and ultimate authority over the world He made.

APPLY:

Surrounded by wide skies, coastal breezes, and the beauty of Australia’s landscape, I cannot help but think of the words of Psalm 104. Each moment, whether observing the Indian Ocean, or the Australian animals, whales and tropical fishes is a reminder of God’s hand in creation. “He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains.” (v10)

Walking in caves or lakes, I see how water brings life to even the driest land. I feel God’s provision everywhere. “The trees of the Lord are well watered… in them the birds make their nests.” (v16,17)

I notice the birds with their unfamiliar calls and colours and it strikes me that even they are provided for. How much more does God care for me?

So, as I return home, I echo the psalmist’s final words: “May the glory of the Lord endure forever… I will sing to the Lord all my life.” (v31, 33)

DO:

Today, Psalm 104 reminds me that God is the Creator of everything. As we face issues like pollution and climate change, I am encouraged to protect the world God has made.

Finally, I resolve to respond to God with praise and gratitude.

PRAY:

Dear Creator God, may my meditation be pleasing to You. You are my creator and I worship You with all that is in me. Amen.
