Imperfect People, Perfect Purpose

BRD REFLECTION 2026

1 Corinthians 12:12-31 and Psalm 21:8-13 (NIV)

(Woon Kee Yang, Associate Lay Leader)

READ:

1 Corinthians 12:12-31 and Psalm 21:8-13 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Paul taught that the body of Christ is one body with many parts, each intentionally put in place by God.

The body comprises the ‘lesser and greater’ parts in the world’s eyes. Some parts appear more prominent whilst others seem hidden or weaker. Yet all parts are connected, moving together according to His design. The ‘weaker’ parts are indispensable, worthy of special honour because God values them.

Despite our imperfections, God is the One who weaves His perfect tapestry – every member intentionally put in place for His purposes and glory.

APPLY:

What would the kingdom of God look like as one body of Christ?

To illustrate, I was reminded of a local hospitality company that employs persons often overlooked in the workforce; persons with disabilities (PWDs). With close to 15% of their staff being disadvantaged individuals, they created “a service culture that is caring and inclusive”.

As I recall, during breakfast, the dining hall became busy. As these colleagues took orders, served food, and cleared tables, it was clear that they could not perform as quickly or effectively as the regular staff, yet they offered their best – and diners responded with appreciation for their diligence and sincerity.

The company took a risk with possible slower service, potential impact on efficiency or image (three-star rating on Google) yet staff were patient, encouraging, collaborative and forgiving when mistakes were made.

The breakfast operation offers a glimpse of the body of Christ at work: a community where every member – regardless of ability, background, or perceived strength – is valued, embraced, supported, and given a place to contribute.

How do I learn to work together and create value with the resources He has provided? How do I value what He values. How can the body bless others despite its imperfections?

On the evening before He was arrested, Jesus prayed to the Father that His disciples and all believers “may be one” in unity and in love (John 17:11, 21-23). This unity reflects the heart and desire of God – love, collaboration, humility and honouring one another.

DO:

What I seek to do:

  • See the body through God’s eyes – every person intentionally placed, every gift, every weakness a place for God’s strength to shine.
  • Continue seeking ways to make tangible differences for the less privileged in our communities.
  • Encourage collaborative mindsets and action, regardless of our positions or abilities so that all may participate in God’s work.

PRAY:

Gracious Father, thank You for accepting our imperfections as individuals and as a body in Christ even as You are perfect. Help and guide me to walk in unity and purpose. Teach me to see the world through Your eyes and help me be a faithful witness, strengthened and encouraged by Your power as I serve and worship You.

Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength!
We will sing and praise Your power.
(Psalm 21:13)

Amen.
