The Father’s Greatest Gift

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Luke 11 and Psalms 23 (NIV)

(Lawrence Lim from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Luke 11: 1-13 and Psalm 23:1-4 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

In Luke 11:1–13, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, encouraging persistence and assuring them that God answers. What struck me most is His illustration of a father’s gift to his child (vv.11–13). Instead of just giving good gifts, our heavenly Father gives us His very presence in the person of the Holy Spirit, His greatest gift.

David echoes this truth in Psalm 23:1: “The LORD is my shepherd; I lack nothing.”

APPLY:

These passages remind me that when I pray, God is always there. He is enough for my challenges. Yet, I sometimes still find myself worrying after prayer. That’s why I’m amazed at how David could boldly declare, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). I know this truth in my head, but do I trust it fully in my heart?

Looking back, I see God’s faithfulness in my family’s journey. When my wife fell ill and needed surgery, God surrounded us with love and support. Our small group and church friends, including my aunt’s friends who have known me since I was young, prayed with us and journeyed alongside us. My wife experienced a deep peace and confidence that God would see her through. We saw His hand at work: God intervened and brought forward her consultation with the surgeon by a month, allowing her to undergo the operation earlier and receive the timely treatment she needed. By His grace, she has recovered fully.

Through this, God reminded me many times not to fear, but to have the fear of the Lord — to recognise His greatness and trust His control. I have experienced Him as a loving Father. With Father God and the support of His church, I can declare with confidence, “I will fear no evil.”

DO:

I will:

1. Take time each night to review my day, noticing how God led me, and strengthen my trust in Him.

2. Be consistent in family devotion at night and lead my family in morning prayers before school and work.

PRAY:

Father God, thank You for Your amazing love for me and my family. Thank You for healing my wife and for blessing us through Your church. Forgive me, Lord Jesus, for my little faith. Thank You that You intercede for me and watch over me. Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence and guidance. Help me to walk in trust each day. Amen.
