When God Leads, Trust And Obey

Genesis 31:1-21 and Psalm 93 (NIV)

Genesis 31:1–21 records a significant turning point in Jacob’s life. After many years of working for Laban, God told Jacob to return to the land of his fathers and promised, “I will be with you” (Genesis 31:3). Jacob responded by leaving with his family and possessions.
Psalm 93 gives us the foundation for this journey: “The LORD reigns.” God is sovereign, majestic, and stronger than the raging waters.
Key verse:
- Genesis 31:3 – I will be with you.
- Genesis 31:13 – Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.
- Psalm 93:1 – The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
OBSERVE:
Jacob’s circumstances were difficult. His relationship with Laban had becomestrained, and he could see that things were changing around him. Yet Jacob did not remain where he was simply because it was familiar. He listened to God and acted.
What stands out is that God’s promise of His presence came before Jacob’s journey. God did not promise Jacob an easy road; He promised, “I will be with you.” Psalm 93 reminds me that although life may seem turbulent, God’s throne remains secure. The storms may be powerful, but God is greater than the storms.
APPLY:
As I reflect on my own life, I realise that I often want to know the whole journey before taking the next step. I can become anxious when circumstances are uncertain or when I cannot control the outcome.
Jacob reminds me that faith means trusting God enough to obey Him, even when I cannot see everything ahead. Psalm 93 reminds me that my circumstances do not determine who is in control—the Lord reigns.
I can therefore release my fears and trust that God is present, faithful, and sovereign over my life.
DO:
Today, I will surrender one area of uncertainty to God. I will ask Him for courage to take the next step of obedience rather than trying to control the whole journey.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, thank You that You are always with me and that You reign over every circumstance of my life. When I face uncertainty, help me not to be afraid, but to trust Your presence and follow Your leading. Give me courage to obey You, one step at a time, knowing that You are faithful and will never leave me. In Jesus’ name, Amen
