The Joy Of Seeking The Divine Healer

BRD REFLECTIONS:

Acts 20:1-38 and Psalm 30:1-12 (NIV)

(Alicia Chua from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Psalm 30 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

This is a psalm of David in which he extolled God for delivering him from his enemies, for healing him and keeping him alive. Through David’s praises, his cries, his pleadings, his musings, his supplications and his thanksgiving, it can be surmised that God was David’s constant companion in every trial he experienced.

APPLY:

At the time of this writing, I am still recovering from a viral infection that has baffled the doctors, raked up more questions than answers, disrupted my physiological rhythm and functioning, made me very ill for months and left me in much pain and anguish.

I must confess that as the daily struggles turned into weeks, and weeks became months, it grew harder to keep God in focus and trust in His promises. Pain and discomfort occupied most of my waking moments. The only times I felt relief were when I managed to drift into a fitful sleep, only to awaken to find that I was still stuck in this condition. I desperately needed to be healed.

Naturally, when reading Psalm 30, I was drawn to verse 2 :

“O Lord my God, I cried to You and You have healed me.”

But as I pondered further on the verse, it became apparent that the psalmist was primarily preoccupied with God (referred to God four times in the verse) and only secondarily with healing. The verse was pointing me beyond the healing to the Divine Healer. The healing is needful but the psalmist is inviting me to experience the deeper joy of seeking and finding the Divine Healer – the Faithful One who walks beside me through all of life’s peaks, valleys and ordinary days.

DO:

I need to diligently practise savouring God’s Word and not simply read it cursorily.

PRAY:

Father God, incline Your ears to me. Remember that I am frail and infirm, a mere mortal made from dust. You are my Maker, the One who sustains me and ordains each day of my life. Your breath of life within keeps me alive. Grant me a steadfast faith and the sweet joy of Your constant presence as I entrust the healing I need into Your Hands. In Jesus’ mighty Name I pray. Amen.
