Trust And Obey

BRD REFLECTIONS:

Job 1, 2 and Psalm 119:49-56 (NIV)

(Mabel Tay, Chairperson of Missions)

READ:

Psalm 119:49-56 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Psalm 119:49-56 declares the sustaining power of God’s promises during times of affliction. The psalmist asks God to remember His Word that has given him hope (v.49). In his suffering, the psalmist finds sustenance in God’s promise (v.50). He faces relentless scorn from the arrogant yet remains committed to God’s law (v.51). He remembers God’s ancient laws and finds comfort in them (v.52). Righteous indignation grips him because of those who have disregarded God’s law (v.53). He then resumes his proclamation of the centrality of God’s decrees in his life (v.54). In the night, he remembers God’s name that he may keep His law; this obedience has become his practice (v.55-56).

APPLY:

I have learnt the following lessons from the passage above:

  1. God’s Word as a source of hope: The psalmist clings to God’s promises in difficult times, highlighting scripture as a wellspring of hope, comfort and truth.
  2. Commitment in response to attack: Despite facing scorn, the psalmist remains unwavering in his commitment to God’s Word. This is an exhortation for me to stay faithful when under attack.
  3. Meditation for obedience: I love how the psalmist’s meditation on God’s name in quiet moments is not just a routine but a powerful discipline that fosters obedience.

DO:

Psalm 119:49-56 reminds me of the importance of clinging to God’s promises and remaining faithful to His commands. Like the psalmist, I will find comfort and courage to persevere in affliction by anchoring myself on His Word in turbulent times. I will set aside time each day to seek God so that my mind and heart are aligned with His will, and ask him to continually guide my thoughts and actions toward righteousness.

PRAY:

In still moments, Lord, let me hear
Your Word that calms, Your presence near.
With Your decrees, my life please steer,
Your law, my song, dispels all fear.

Amen.
