Trusting In God’s Strength And Deliverance

BRD REFLECTION 2025

1 Chronicles 10:1-14; 11:1-47 and Psalm 70:1-5 (NIV)

(Judy Leow from Mandarin Ministry)

OBSERVE:

1 Chronicles 10:1-14 recounts the tragic downfall of King Saul, who, along with his sons, was defeated in battle. Saul’s failure to seek God and his disobedience led to his ultimate demise, and his kingship was handed over to David. It serves as a reminder that true leadership stems from obedience to God.

In 1 Chronicles 11:1-47, David is anointed as the king of Israel, fulfilling God’s promise. This chapter also celebrates David’s mighty warriors, showcasing values such as loyalty, courage, and unwavering faith. It inspires us to trust in God’s perfect timing and journey alongside others who share our faith and mission.

In Psalm 70:1-5, I see an earnest plea for God’s deliverance, expressing the psalmist’s urgent need for help. He calls on God to act swiftly, to shame the wicked, and to bring joy to those who revere the Lord. This prayer reminds us to rely on God when we face difficulties, trusting in His salvation and righteousness. Even in times of hardship, we should honour God, for He is our ever-present help and deliverer.

These scriptures together present the following critical learning points for me:

  • King Saul failed due to his disobedience to God.
  • King David was blessed because of his steadfast trust in God.
  • Psalm 70 illustrates how believers should turn to God in times of trouble.

APPLY:

In high school, my family faced significant financial challenges after the sudden passing of my father, our sole provider. On top of school responsibilities, I had to manage my late father’s business accounts. Each day was filled with anxiety and despair, and my dream of attending university seemed unattainable.

One day, I read Psalm 70:5 —“But as for me, I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; Lord, do not delay.” These words deeply resonated with me, teaching me to trust God amid my struggles. By praying daily and surrendering my burdens to Him, I experienced a profound transformation.

Instead of succumbing to worry, I focused on what I could achieve each day. Over time, my family’s financial situation gradually stabilized. Although our challenges weren’t resolved overnight, I was able to attend night school to study accounting. This journey taught me to rely on God rather than be anxious, filling my heart with peace and hope.

DO:

I will:

  • avoid Saul’s mistake of self-reliance; instead, I will emulate David’s trust in God;
  • in moments of helplessness, let prayer be my first response rather than panic;
  • trust that God’s plan is perfect and requires patience to unfold.

PRAY:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word that brings me light and strength.

Please grant me wisdom through these scriptures, strengthen my faith, and help me trust You in all circumstances.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
