What Are Your Pillars For Total Defence?
BRD REFLECTION 2026
1 Corinthians 11:17-34 and Psalm 20:6-9 (NIV)
(John Chan from Family Life Ministry)
READ:
Read Psalm 20 paying particular attention to verses 6 to 9.
OBSERVE:
Singapore’s pillars for total defence consist of Military, Civil, Economic, Social, Psychological, and the newly added Digital Defence. These pillars act as a form of deterrence, and help to safeguard our little red dot country against a range of diverse threats, such as to our military, economy and cybersecurity.
As I read about the recent developments in geopolitical tensions around the world, and the uncertain times we are living in now, I begin to ask myself about the pillars of total defence I am building for myself. Do I have a Spiritual pillar which I am building up and relying on?
Nations, companies and even individuals will boast of their great military, economic or social powers, but history has also shown that many such great nations, companies and individuals will eventually fail and lose their powers.
In this Psalm, David knew exactly that the true might of his nation was not in military or economic prowess, but rather in their reliance on God’s power.
APPLY:
With the uncertainties of the times I am living in now, I need to be mindful not to focus on the uncertainties and insecurities, but rather focus on the assurance that my confidence is in God. While fear of the uncertainties and insecurities are very real, I need to let these fears drive me to the source of my faith – my God who loves me and promises ultimate victory. I need to build up a strong Spiritual pillar.
DO:
I will build up and strengthen my Spiritual pillar by making it a priority to:
- Invest in reading God’s word,
- Have time for reflection and quietness to allow God to speak to me,
- Be active in the church community to have Christian brothers and sisters to journey alongside me to build up my Spiritual pillar.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, amid times of uncertainty and insecurities, remind me that my true security is in You. Help me to build a strong Spiritual pillar rooted in Your Word, guided by Your voice, and supported by Your people. I place my trust in You alone. Amen.
