Isaiah 7 and Psalms 109:21-31 (NIV)

(Shannon Loh, from  Small Group Ministry)

READ:

When I look at Isaiah 7 and Psalm 109:21–31, a clear theme shines through – faith in God’s steadfast love and promises.

In Isaiah 7, the people of Judah faced enemies that caused them to shake like trees in the wind. Their natural response was fear, but God’s message was: “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” The Lord promised His presence and gave a sign pointing to His faithfulness. The call was not to rely on human strength or alliances but to trust God, who is with His people.

In Psalm 109, David spoke from a place of deep distress. Surrounded by opposition, he did not turn inward or retaliate. Instead, he cried out to God. His prayer rested on God’s steadfast love, not his own worthiness. He believed God would deliver. His lament turned into praise: “With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord, in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.”

OBSERVE:

Both passages remind me that faith is about clinging to God when fear, uncertainty and opposition are real. Faith is a decision to trust God’s character: His mercy, His promises, His unchanging love.

This truth is important. I face moments when my heart feels unsteady—whether due to anxiety, difficult circumstances or misunderstanding. In these moments, God calls me to stand firm in faith. He has already given the greatest sign of His faithfulness in Jesus Christ, Emmanuel—God with us.

APPLY:

My response:

• I trust – choosing to rely not on my own control but on God’s promises.

• I hope – knowing His word will not fail.

• I praise – singing praise even before the answer comes, knowing that God is near.

DO:

Like David, learn to say: “But you, Sovereign Lord, help me for your name’s sake.” May my life reflect unshakable trust in the One who always keeps His word.

PRAY:

LORD, in times when my heart trembles and fear surrounds me, remind me that You are Emmanuel – God with us. Teach me to stand firm in faith, not looking to my own strength, but to Your steadfast love and mercy.

You see my weaknesses and hear my cries. Stand at my side, fill me with hope that rests in Your promises. Let my lips overflow with praise and let my life be a testimony of Your faithfulness. Amen.
