God’s Faithfulness

BRD REFLECTIONS:

1 Kings 15:1-34; 16:1-34 and Psalm 89:1-18 (NIV)

(Grace Tham, BRD Core Team)

READ:

Psalm 89

V1: I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
V2: I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
V5: The heavens praise your wonders, Lord,
    your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
V8: Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?
    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
V14: Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    love and faithfulness go before you.
V16: They rejoice in your name all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.

OBSERVE:

The words ‘your faithfulness’ are repeated in most of the above verses, reiterating how faithful God is. The psalmist gives us clear reasons for his belief that God is faithful. Firstly, His love is great (v1), unchanging and timeless (v2). Even the heavens know and praise God for His faithfulness (v5). Furthermore, God was, is and always will be righteous and just (v14).

APPLY:

As I was preparing to write this reflection, I asked God to reveal to me instances in my life in which He has been faithful, and He brought so many to mind! I recall facing challenges in my family, work and ministry, and how God saw me through them. I certainly did not deserve help since I was not always obedient or faithful in spending time with Him. Yet God was unwavering in His faithfulness to hear my last-minute, desperate prayers and make a way out for me.

In a fickle world that does not keep its promises often, I am so thankful that I serve a God who is faithfulness itself. His faithfulness does not depend on a whim or mood swings. Indeed, there is no one like almighty God whose faithfulness surrounds Him. This tells me that there is never a moment when God is unfaithful. In response, I will rejoice in His name all day long and celebrate His righteousness (v16).

DO:

I will:

  1. Start my prayers with thanksgiving, remembering how God has been faithful to me daily.
  2. Share how God has been faithful in my life, especially to non-Christian family members and friends.

PRAY:

Faithful God, thank You that You stand firm in Your love for me. Thank you for every blessing and victory, for what You  have done in my life. Help me to cultivate a thankful spirit and, like the psalmist, find every opportunity to make Your faithfulness known through all generations.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
