Perfection
BRD REFLECTIONS:
Ezekiel 40, 41 and Psalm 13 (NIV)
(Matthew Peter, SWR Committee Member)
READ:
Ezekiel 41:4 and Psalm 13:5-6 (ESV)
OBSERVE:
In Ezekiel 40 and 41, we encounter a detailed vision given to the prophet Ezekiel, depicting a new temple. This vision, rich with measurements and specifications, offered more than just a blueprint for a physical structure; it symbolised God’s intention to restore and dwell among His people. The meticulous measurements underscored that God’s plans are perfect, precise and purposeful. Just as every dimension of the temple was exact, so too are God’s plans for our lives. It was no surprise to me that the Most Holy Place for His intended dwelling had to be equal in length and breadth.
APPLY:
In 2007, when I was working for a construction company, I had to make a site visit to remodel an office space. I went prepped with my trusted measuring tape and notebook. This was going to be a straightforward process. I have always been meticulous and precise when it comes to measuring and costing for any project and I was good at my job. However, this time, I got the measurement wrong. A missing zero on the floor area and it cost the company thousands of dollars.
Perfection. Many of us strive for accuracy, precision and perfection, be it in our job or in life. We all generally want to produce good work. We want to be precise at what we do and always be better at doing it. Some are even known to be “perfectionists”. We want to lead honourable and perfect lives.
The sad truth is that no matter how hard I try, there will always be areas of my life where I falter, miscalculate, misjudge and most of all choose to deliberately sin. Without Christ’s atonement, I am far from this perfect, precise and Holy God.
God is perfect. He knows exactly what He wants and the way He wants it. He is God. He does not make errors, not in calculation, not in creation and certainly not in redemption. I do not deserve His profound, endless love nor His faithfulness. But by His abundant grace and mercies, He made a way possible.
As I read Ezekiel’s vision, of the Most Holy Place being equal in length and breadth, I’m reminded of my imperfections. How unequal my life is. By my own strength I am unable to be Holy, Christ-like and steadfast. His righteousness alone makes it possible for me to draw near to my Perfect God.
DO:
I will give thanks for His steadfast love over me.
I have no need to strive to be perfect, as Christ is the perfector of my faith.
I will see past the imperfections of others as I work and serve with them.
PRAY:
Perfect Father, I am filled with gratitude that You would choose an imperfect person like me to be part of Your perfect plan for humanity. I am unworthy but You alone are the sovereign Lord, whose nature is always to have mercy. I thank You for Your manifold and great mercies. Help me too to see past the imperfections of others as I work and serve with them. Surround me with Your steadfast love, and may my heart find joy in Your salvation all the days of my life.
In the name of Christ I pray, Amen.
