Am I Humble?

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Isaiah 37 and Psalm 119:153-160 (NIV)

(Christopher Ong, D&N Staff Team)

READ:

Isaiah 37 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Hezekiah humbled himself and sought God. In a time of crisis, he put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord (v1). He asked the prophet Isaiah to pray to God for Israel (v4). Hezekiah later prayed in the temple himself (v. 14-20).

Hezekiah was a king and surely wore fine clothes, but he gave these up for uncomfortable and ugly sackcloth. Hezekiah could have let Isaiah seek God while relaxing comfortably in his palace, but he went into the temple himself to pray.

Hezekiah humbled himself.

APPLY:

Today’s reflection has led me to ponder on humility.

Am I humble? Do I humble myself before God? I would like to be described as having humility, yet I am often blind to the pride within me. I would like to say I value God and He is my Number 1, yet sometimes, no, often, I am just paying lip service. I am actually Number 1.

Do I seek God during times of crisis and decision-making? How humble and sincere am I in seeking Him? I would like to declare that I am guided by God first, yet I often rely more on my own wisdom and sometimes, other people’s too.. When I seek God, I am often impatient and desire a quick-fix answer. Sometimes, it must be the answer I want. If He starts to reveal something uncomfortable about me, I get defensive and tell Him He lacks focus, and ask Him to get back to the main point which is my needs. The thought of repentance and fasting when seeking Him seems apt only for biblical characters. After all, we are living in the 21st century.

Hezekiah humbled himself but I am seldom like Hezekiah. I need to grow in humility.

DO:

I will:

1. Reflect on Hezekiah’s humility and actions before God.

2. Examine my posture and humility before God.

3. Be humble before God.

PRAY:

Abba Father, thank You for loving me despite my pride. Forgive me for my lack of humility. Please grant me the desire to love You and be humble before You. Whether in times of crisis or not, may I seek You sincerely and humbly. Please help me as I reflect on this passage today and seek to obey Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
