Obedience With Child-like Faith

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Isaiah 36 and Psalm 119:145-152 (NIV)

(Kuah Ann Nee, SWR Committee Member)

READ:

For this devotion, Psalm 119:145-146 spoke to me: “I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord, and I will obey your decrees. I call out to you; save me and I will keep your statutes.”

OBSERVE:

The psalmist wrote that he called out with all his heart in the first half of verse 145. This conveyed the meaning that he prayed aloud wholeheartedly. This idea was repeated in the first half of verse 146. His was a prayer for obedience, as indicated in the second half of verses 145 and 146 – “obey your decrees” and “keep your statutes”.

APPLY:

The first application I gleaned is praying aloud wholeheartedly. I usually prefer to pray silently since it does not require me to craft a prayer with logical flow and grammatically accurate sentences. However, God impressed upon me that He delights in hearing me speak to Him wholeheartedly, regardless of logical flow and elegant sentences.

Additionally, as I reflect on the way the psalmist calls out to say that he “will obey” and “keep your statutes” in these two verses, I realise that I am reluctant to say out loud to God that I “will obey”. This is likely because I am afraid that there may be areas (unknown to me now) that I may struggle to submit to His lordship.

I need to pray to God for obedience and child-like faith.

DO:

I will speak to God in prayer wholeheartedly and trust that He can understand where I am coming from. I will pray for obedience to God with child-like faith. I will reflect on the areas that I find difficult to practise obedience to God.

PRAY:

Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing to me through the psalmist that You delight in me speaking to You in a manner that a small child would to his or her loving parents. I acknowledge that it is not in my nature to do so. So, help me God, one step at a time. I pray for my faith to increase so that obedience may increase one step at a time.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
