Am I Living For God’s Word Or Chasing Worldly “Bread”?
BRD REFLECTION 2025
(Michelle Koh from Small Group Ministry)
READ:
• Luke 4: 1-8 (NIV)
• Psalm 17:2 (NIV) – “Let my vindication come from You; may Your eyes see what is right.”
OBSERVE:
In Luke 4, Jesus is tested by the devil in the wilderness. He resists each temptation not through debate, but by firmly quoting Scripture. He reminds us that spiritual sustenance (v.4) and exclusive worship of God (v.8) are non-negotiables. Psalm 17:2 echoes this reliance on God’s justice, seeking vindication and rightness not from others, but from God who truly sees the heart.
APPLY:
These verses resonate deeply with me. I remember a season when I was misunderstood while serving on my condominium’s management council. False accusations were made, and I felt a strong urge to defend myself. Yet, Psalm 17:2 reminded me that I didn’t need to justify myself as God sees the truth and I could rest in His justice. I was also tempted to seek approval through people-pleasing, but Luke 4 reminded me that my worship and loyalty must remain solely with God, not with the crowd.
We live in a world that constantly tells us to prove our worth, chase success, and justify ourselves. But Jesus shows us another way: to be rooted in God’s truth, to serve Him alone, and to trust Him with the outcomes, even when it costs us. Jesus’ example compels me to realign my priorities: Scripture first, worship focused, and trust placed only in God’s justice and timing.
DO:
I will:
- Commit to starting each day in God’s Word to feed my spirit before tending to my to-do list.
- Regularly ask: “Am I living to please God or people?” and let that guide my actions.
- In moments of misunderstanding or stress, pray Psalm 17:2 and rest in God’s vindication.
PRAY:
Lord, help me hunger first for Your Word and find nourishment in Your Word above all else. Teach me to worship and serve You alone, especially when other voices demand my attention. In moments of injustice or misunderstanding, remind me that You see all things clearly. Let my vindication come from You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
