2 Chronicles 24:1-27; 25:1-28 and Psalm 94:1-23 (NIV)
(Lim Swee Kim, from D&N Ministry)
READ:
2 Chronicles 24:1-27; 25:1-28 and Psalm 94:1-23 (NIV)
In particular, Psalm 94:1 stood out to me: “The Lord is a God who avenges.”
OBSERVE:
King Joash had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord when he had Jehoiada as his Chief Priest. When Joash wanted to restore the temple of the Lord, he summoned Jehoiada to bring to the Lord the tax that Moses had required of Israel, and all the officials and people brought their contributions gladly. King Joash and Jehoiada gave it to those who carried out the work required for the temple of the Lord, hiring masons and carpenters, as well as workers in iron and bronze.
When Jehoiada died at the age of a hundred and thirty, he was buried with the kings in the City of David because of the good he had done in Israel for God and His temple. Then, Joash began to listen to the officials of Judah, and abandoned the temple of the Lord and worshipped idols instead.
And when Zechariah, son of the late Jehoiada, received the Spirit of God and told the people “This is what God says: Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, He has forsaken you”, King Joash did not remember the kindness his father Jehoiada had shown him, and killed Zechariah. As Zechariah lay dying, he said, “May the Lord see this and call you to account.”
APPLY:
“Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law; you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked.” (Psalm 98:12-13).
Joash eventually perished as his officials killed him in his bed where he lay severely wounded after fighting with the Arameans who had invaded Judah and Jerusalem.
DO:
“The Lord knows all human plans” (Psalm 94:11) so I should only do what is right in the eyes of God.I will be wise in knowing that the Lord sees and hears all.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, keep my eyes and heart set only on You. Forgive me for listening to ungodly voices and practising idolatry. Wash away all my sins so that I may love the Lord God with all my heart, with all my soul, and with all my mind, and with all my strength. In Jesus’ Name I ask. Amen.
