Safeguard Our Spiritual Lifestyle
BRD REFLECTION 2025
Isaiah 34 and Psalm 119:129-136 (NIV)
(Timothy Chan from SWR Committee Member)
READ:
Isaiah 34:8-10 and Psalm 119:129-136 (NRSVUE)
OBSERVE:
In Psalm 119:133-134, the Psalmist yearns for stability during tumultuous times and the struggle to maintain a healthy spiritual life. Human oppression limits him from acting upon his values and practices (precepts). He asks God to safeguard his communion with Him.
In Isaiah 34:8 I read about how God is enraged and will seek vengeance upon all who are hostile towards His people.
APPLY:
I can relate to the Psalmist’s difficulty in living out an uncompromising spiritual lifestyle (Ps 119:134). In an iniquity-prone society, there is a tendency to keep silent, look the other way, and rationalise injustice that might even happen before my own eyes. This norm conflicts with my desire to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly (Micah 6:8), because I fear my good intention causes doubt or jealousy. As such, I often hesitate to extend unconditional love to others.
Isaiah 34:8 encourages me to express godly behaviours, leaving God to deal with any potential hostility.
DO:
I will boldly face hardship and oppression because God empowers me through the Holy Spirit. His wisdom guides me and He gives me good gifts. As such, I must cling to my life-giving God and commit to living a godly life, choosing to please the God who is almighty and who loves me.
PRAY:
Lord Jesus, You are gracious to those who love Your name (Psalm 119:132). You know my hardships, for You bore the Cross and the weight of my sin. I call out to You—see my struggles and the oppression I face.
Shine Your face upon me, O God (Psalm 119:135), and guide my steps. Prepare the way before me and keep me from falling.
I surrender my future to You, for only You know my tomorrow. Bring light to my confusion (Psalm 119:130) and peace to my heart.
Send me out to live boldly, to please You and serve others, overcoming my weakness by Your strength. Amen.
