Isaiah 63 and Psalm 144 (NIV)

(Chiam Qing Ling from Prayer & Praise, Ministry)

READ:

Psalm 144 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Psalm 144 is split into four key themes including:

1. David Praises God (vv. 1–2)

David begins by exalting the Lord as his rock, strength, shield, and deliverer — the one who equips him for battle and sustains him.

2. Human Frailty and the Fleeting Nature of Life (vv. 3–4)

David reflects on the insignificance and brevity of human life, acknowledging that humanity is weak and mortal before the eternal God.

3. Petition for Deliverance and Rescue (vv. 5–10)

David calls on God to intervene with power — to “come down”, deliver him from enemies, and provide rescue in the midst of danger.

4. A Prayer for Blessing (vv. 11–15)

The psalm concludes with David seeking God’s blessing upon the nation: protection, prosperity, flourishing families, and peace within the land.

APPLY:

Today’s psalm reminds me that it is God who “trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle”. It is He who equips, sustains, and enables me to live each day. He is a loving God in whom I can take refuge, even in the smallest challenges I face.

It also reminds me to go to Him when I feel overwhelmed by the many tasks before me. On busy days, I often get so caught up in doing that I forget to pray, and I push aside time in His Word. This psalm gently calls me back — to rely on Him, not on my own strength.

I’m comforted and thankful for the promise that one day there will be “no cry of distress in our streets”, and that we can look forward to His coming. Until then, it reassures me that He knows what I’m going through and that I can count on Him to fight my battles.

DO:

To be persistent in my bible reading daily.

PRAY:

Thank You for Your Word that is ever present and true. Thank You for being a God I can count on and take refuge in. I’m sorry for pushing You aside when life gets busy. I pray that by Your grace, You would draw me back closer to You. Please grant me Your grace to continually seek You and to put You first when other idols vie for my heart.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
