Isaiah 1 and Psalm 40 (NIV)

(Hoo Feng Wen from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Isaiah 1 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

God states the following charges for Judah through His servant, Isaiah: They have rebelled against God (v2, 4, 5) and do not seek justice (v4, v21-23). This results in a breakdown of their relationship and their offerings to God no longer please Him (v11-15). However, the turning point occurs in v16-17 where God calls Judah to seek justice so that He can cleanse them (v18-20). He will redeem and restore them into a faithful city through His justice (v24-31), keeping those who are repentant (v27) and judging those who remain rebellious (v28).

APPLY:

Today’s passage is one that is a tough pill to swallow. God hates empty worship: this is seen in those who call themselves God’s people but are unfaithful and do not share His heart of compassion and justice. While I may not be a murderer, I must confess that I lack God’s heart to care for the communities in need, and care more about material things that bring me joy instead of justice. True worship comes from the heart not through mere routine or on the surface.

While God has every right to judge Judah for their sins, he offers complete cleansing and righteousness through repentance. I know the fulfilment of this promise through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross as a propitiation for my sins. True cleansing of sins comes only from God instead of empty offerings and I give thanks for the grace he has offered to me.

DO:

I want to have a humble heart towards seeking God and justice. I also want to make learning more about different marginalized communities a priority, and understand how I can play a part in showing God’s love and compassion.

PRAY:

Dear God, You are righteous, just, compassionate, and gracious. You hate evil and empty worship. Forgive me for the times that my actions did not please You. Mould my heart towards repentance so that I can share Your compassion. I give thanks that it is only through Christ that I am cleansed from my sins and restored in righteousness. Show me how to care for Your people. Amen.
