Genesis 31:36-55 and Psalm 94:12-23 (NIV)

(David Mok, Lay Leader Representative)

READ:

Jacob’s unfair treatment in Genesis 31:36-55 and God’s character in Psalm 94:12-23 stood out for me.

OBSERVE:

As I read Genesis 31:36-55, I see Jacob finally standing up to Laban after twenty years of unfair treatment. Jacob served faithfully, bore the losses himself, and never touched what was not his, even though Laban changed his wages many times. What strikes me is that despite Laban’s unfair dealings, God was watching over Jacob the whole time. In the end, instead of continuing in conflict, Laban proposed a covenant of peace with Jacob, and they parted ways without violence. This connects deeply with Psalm 94:12-23, which reminds me that the Lord will not forsake His people and that He will grant them relief from days of trouble. The psalm also assures me that God will repay those who are crooked for their wickedness.

APPLY:

As I reflect on this passage, I am reminded of times at work when I was doing a decent job but was still overlooked and treated unfairly. Jacob did not retaliate or scheme against Laban; instead, he continued to work diligently and entrusted the outcome to God. In the same way, I am reminded that I do not need to fight every battle or defend myself in every unfair situation, because God sees my faithfulness even when others fail to acknowledge it. I am also encouraged to know that when I face people who may scheme against me, God can turn situations around, just as He did with Laban.

DO:

I will continue to hold fast to God’s way in my work and relationships, even when others treat me unfairly. Instead of becoming bitter or trying to get even, I will trust that God sees my faithfulness and will vindicate me in His timing. When I feel anxious about a difficult relationship or situation, I will remind myself of Psalm 94 and hold on to the promise that God upholds the righteous and will not abandon me. I will bring my challenges and worries to Him in prayer, asking Him to give me the peace that surpasses understanding, which only He can give.

PRAY:

Dear Lord, give me the courage and perseverance to walk in Your way at work and in all my relationships. Help me to seek You in every circumstance and to surrender fully to Your plans and timing. Protect me from the schemes of the evil one and fill me with Your peace as I rest completely in You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
