Luke 1:26–56 (NIV)

Luke 1:26–56 tells the story of God breaking into ordinary lives to begin His great work of salvation. The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will bear the Son of God, and though troubled and uncertain, Mary responds with humble obedience and trust. She then visits Elizabeth, who receives her with joy, affirmation, and spiritual insight. The passage culminates in Mary’s song

of praise where she praises God for His faithfulness, His concern for the humble, and His unfolding redemptive plan. Together, these verses show how God’s purposes move forward through willing obedience, warm community, and hearts that recognise and celebrate His work.

There are several lessons we can learn from this passage. First, Mary’s obedience stands out. She does not have all the answers, nor is the path ahead easy, yet she surrenders her will fully to God: “I am the Lord’s servant.” Her obedience reminds us that God often calls us beyond our comfort and perceived abilities. Faith is not the absence of fear but the decision to trust God despite it.

Second, Elizabeth models warmth, welcome, and spiritual attentiveness. She receives Mary with joy, affirms God’s work in her, and creates a safe space where faith is strengthened. As I reflect on Elizabeth’s warmth towards Mary, I think about WMC’s Vision 2035 to be a welcoming, missional, and caring church. When we notice God’s work in others, speak life-giving words, and open our hearts and homes, we become a community through which God’s mission can flourish.

Third, this passage teaches us that surrender leads to praise and transformation. Mary’s song flows out of her obedience and her experience of God’s faithfulness. When we place ourselves in God’s hands, He not only works through us but also reshapes our hearts to align with His purposes.

I resonate deeply with this passage through a personal experience. There was a time when I was asked to take up a role in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), and my initial response was reluctance. I felt inadequate and unprepared, convinced that I was not competent enough for the responsibility. Yet, as I prayed and surrendered my fears and reservations to God, I sensed His gentle prompting to trust Him. In stepping out in obedience, God gradually provided the skills, confidence, and courage I lacked. Like Mary, I learned that God does not call the equipped; He equips those who are willing.

[ Reflection Questions ]

1.   Where might God be inviting you to trust Him beyond your comfort or sense of competence?

2.  How can we, like Elizabeth, intentionally create a more welcoming, caring, and affirming church community?

3.   What helps you move from fear or hesitation to surrender and praise when responding to God’s call?
