Am I Blind Too?

BRD REFLECTIONS:

John 9 and Psalm 62 (NIV)

(Desmond Yiong, Small Group Ministry)

READ:

John 9 and Psalm 62 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

The following verses resonated with me in this season of my spiritual journey.

John 9:40  Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What?  Are we blind too?”

Psalm 62:1-2  Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.  Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress; I will never be shaken.

APPLY:

I started serving in church years ago.  In serving, I have experienced  ups and downs.

There were moments when I thought of quitting.  After all, I am just a volunteer, my subconscious mind thought.  One day, however, I met with a ministry chairperson for lunch with the intention to leave the position I was in.  The night before the intended meeting, I was listening to one of the late David Pawson’s sermons when he said “God does not like quitters”.  Those words struck me hard.  I felt that God was telling me something.

I went ahead to meet the chairperson the next day without talking about quitting.  We had a wonderful lunch and shared life experiences.

Recently, I attended a newly curated course, “School of Leadership” (SOL).  I shared that we are all wired to give our very best in what we do.  I have always felt that in order for others to have confidence in me, I should work faultlessly and speedily in this fast-paced society.  However, at the end of the SOL, I discovered that I should work towards going far and not fast.  I should work with others as the body of Christ and not on my own.

Reading John 9, I realized that I was spiritually blind when I had thought of quitting. It also reminded me to focus on God even when I am presumably doing all the right things and yet, might unknowingly be adopting the wrong spiritual posture.

DO:

I need to slow down and work alongside fellow brothers and sisters-in-Christ.

As in Psalm 62, I want to find rest with our Lord through fellowship and doing God’s work together with others.  I want to learn to see difficult situations as opportunities to put my spiritual growth into practice.

PRAY:

Thank You, Lord, for Your mercy and grace to me.  Thank You for keeping my spiritual health in check as I continue to serve You by serving others.  Help me to surrender my challenges and remind me to trust in You at all times for You are my refuge.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
