Man Schemes; God Remains Faithful

Genesis 27:1-13 and Psalm 89:1-8 (NIV)

READ:
In Genesis 27:1, Isaac, wishing to bless Esau before he died, called for his older son and addressed him as “My son.” In verse 8, Rebekah instructed Jacob, “Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you.”
OBSERVE:
Each parent had a favoured son. Esau won his father’s heart because he was a skilful hunter and could prepare the meat that Isaac loved. Earlier, in Genesis 25:23, the Lord told Rebekah that two nations were in her womb and that the younger would dominate the older. Perhaps this knowledge prompted her to favour the younger son, Jacob. Each person in this story sought to fulfil an individual desire rather than trust in God’s ability to fulfil His plans. Isaac, who might have known of the divine revelation, still sought to bestow the blessing on the elder son. Rebekah, not trusting in God’s plan, tried to trick Isaac into giving the firstborn blessing to Jacob. Jacob continued with the deception, fearing that he would miss out on the blessing.
APPLY:
As a child of God, I know that God has a wonderful plan for me. Yet I often identify with Isaac, Rebekah, and Jacob. Rather than simply trusting in God’s timing and plans, I have at times tried to manage outcomes. When faced with obstacles, issues, and problems, I am tempted to act, or even scheme, to achieve my personal goals. Today, I am reminded that God’s plan calls me to rely solely on His divine timing and promises. I need to pray for sustained faith, patience to endure, and, most importantly, trust in His promises and perspective. I need to trust in God’s plan.
DO:
I should remind myself that faith is being sure of what I hope for and certain of what I do not see (Hebrews 11:1). The circumstances I find myself in, whether positive or negative, are paths God has allowed to strengthen me. My responsibility is to continually pray and act in a manner that aligns with God’s goals and honours and glorifies Him.
PRAY:
Lord Jesus, I thank You for Psalm 89:2, which reminds me that Your gracious love endures forever and that You will establish Your faithfulness. Each challenge or situation I face is an opportunity for me to grow. Help me to grow in faith, by trusting in You and You alone for peace of mind, and to provide comfort to my heart. Amen.
