Who Owns My Heart

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Song of Songs 6:4-13, 7:1-9 and Psalm 9 (NIV)

(Stephanie Koh from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Song of Songs 6:4-13, 7:1-9 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

The Song of Songs is a love poem and for most of it, we hear the female lover’s voice longing for her beloved and having an intense desire for him. In this section, we hear more of the beloved’s voice, praising his lover’s beauty with strings of vivid Hebrew metaphors, singling her out from all the other queens, concubines and virgins as the unique and favourite one (6:9).

APPLY:

As I read the Song of Songs, I see how romance can be a rollercoaster of emotions, so intense but also sometimes fleeting. Throughout the songs, there is desire and longing that heightens to the point of restlessness but when the beloved returns to his lover, there is complete reassurance. Yet once he leaves, his lover is once again left wanting. Love is such an integral part of our lives. Indeed, the passions of love are so strong that heartbreak can even result in a heart condition called Takotsubo’s cardiomyopathy.

But as I reflect on the significance of the Song of Songs in the Bible, I realise that the Bible is the greatest love story ever told and I am reminded that God’s love for us is truly the greatest of all time. It is also  no surprise that the most important commandment Jesus gave is to love God. But is my greatest love God? Or are there other things in my life that take first place? Perhaps this is why I feel anxious and restless. Because deep inside, I know these things are temporary and only God can be my true satisfaction.

DO:

I will:

  1. Prioritise God in my heart by spending time in daily devotion with Him and obeying His laws.
  2. Pray daily in adoration, repentance and thankfulness, and submit my needs and wants to God knowing that He has the best intentions for me.

PRAY:

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. You singled me out even when I was that one stray sheep, Lord You left the 99 to find me. I have not been the most faithful in loving You with my whole heart, soul, mind and strength. But Lord, give me a heart that has that passion for You and Your cause over anything else in this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
