Grace Under Fire

OBSERVE:
This passage details the challenges Isaac encountered. The men of Gerar made false claims over the wells that Isaac’s servants had dug. Rather than retaliating against their provocation, Isaac responded with patience and grace by giving in to their claims and moving on to dig new wells. During this time of trial, God appeared to Isaac to reaffirm the promise He had made to Abraham to bless and multiply his descendants.
Similarly, although Isaac was forced to relocate by the Philistine rulers and advisers, they later sought him out to make a covenant of peace with him because they had observed and acknowledged God’s faithfulness to Isaac.
This account reminds me of God’s grace toward mankind and His covenant promise of peace.
APPLY:
Isaac showed grace while facing persecution from the Philistine rulers and the men of Gerar. I believe he was able to do so because he trusted in God and His promises. Isaac was confident that the Lord would provide for him and his household.
I recall the times I felt wronged, misunderstood, or ignored. How I desired to clear my name, set things right, or simply be heard! Yet Scripture reminds me not to act rashly. As stated in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5, blessed are the merciful and blessed are the peacemakers.
As ambassadors of the gospel, we should prioritize love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23) over our personal comfort. Our identity as God’s children empowers us to do so!
DO:
I am very thankful for how God has blessed me in my work: successful projects, a decent reputation, and a collaborative team. My colleagues know that I am a Christian and accept me as such. As a faithful steward of all God has blessed me with, I want to be more sensitive to opportunities to display gospel values in the workplace. I will pray for the courage not to shy away from or avoid such situations, but rather to trust that God will provide for me and guide me, as He always has.
PRAY:
Good Father, teach us to steward our gifts well: our resources, abilities, experiences, and relationships. Reveal to us how we might use these for the furtherance of Your kingdom, bringing Your love and peace to the people around us. Work in our hearts so that we may remain humble, acknowledging that You are our Provider. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
