When The Foundations Shake, God Remains
BRD REFLECTION 2026
1 Corinthians 4 and Psalm 11 (NIV)
(Alvin Chua from Christian Outreach & Social Concerns Ministry)
READ:
Psalm 11 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Psalm 11 opens with David’s confident assertion: “In the Lord I take refuge.” This psalm reveals the desperation of the situation at hand — when David was fleeing from King Saul. The circumstances were bleak. The wicked appeared powerful, moral foundations seemed shaken, and David’s own life felt exposed to danger. What strikes me is verse 4: “The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne.” Even when chaos surrounded him, God remained unshaken. He sees every heart, tests every motive, and ultimately upholds the righteous. The psalm concludes with a promise: “The upright will see his face.” This reminds me that righteousness is about continually turning to God, seeking Him, and trusting Him in the midst of struggle.
APPLY:
This psalm speaks deeply into my own spiritual struggles. Early this morning, when the sky was still dark, I sat by the pool for my devotion. After reading Scripture, I went for a swim. As the water embraced my whole body, I felt a stillness — as though God Himself was surrounding me. In that quiet, He brought to mind my ongoing battle with personal sin. I want to do good. I desire to walk in righteousness. Yet I often stumble into the same temptations, repeating sins I sincerely want to overcome. Sometimes I feel an inner war and wonder how long God will remain patient with me. I feel defeated and hapless.
But Psalm 11 reminds me of David’s steadfast declaration that God is still on His throne. In the face of my seemingly hopeless battle, God sees my heart, my struggles, and my desire to change — not with condemnation but with patience and mercy. He invites me to repentance, not shame. He reassures me that I belong to Him, and that I am not counted among those who delight in wrongdoing. He is at work, shaping me through grace. In God, there is ultimate victory.
DO:
I will intentionally seek out a trusted brother-in-Christ to walk with me as an accountability partner, someone who can listen, pray, and speak truth into my life. I will continue my morning devotions with a heart ready to repent, listen, and realign with God. Each day I will remind myself that God remains sovereign and that His grace is continually transforming me.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, thank You for being my refuge even when I stumble. Keep my heart soft, humble, and repentant. Strengthen me to turn away from sin, walk in righteousness, and seek Your face each day. Amen.
