Serving With The Holy Spirit As My Companion And Guide

BRD REFLECTIONS:

Micah 3:1-12 and Psalm 48:1-14 (NIV)

(Leong Wing Kong from Worship & Music Ministry)

READ:

For this reflection, I focused on Micah 3:1-3, 8-12 and Psalm 48:14.

OBSERVE:

In Micah 3:1-3, the prophet condemned the sins of the leaders and prophets of Israel, who were responsible for teaching the people right from wrong.  The leaders, who should have known the law and imparted their knowledge to the people, had failed to carry out their responsibilities. Instead, they did evil and sinned as they took advantage of the people they were supposed to serve.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Micah derived power and strength to rebuke the leaders and prophets of Israel (Micah 3:8).

In Psalm 48:14, the Psalmist praises God for His guidance as we struggle with decisions. It is likened the Bible being the “guidance” (map) and the Holy Spirit being the “guide” as the constant companion who make sure we read the map correctly.

APPLY:

These verses remind me  to be mindful of my leadership responsibilities (Micah 3:1) and not to fall into wicked temptations (Micah 3:2). When asked to take on more responsibility in the Usher Ministry, I felt overwhelmed and wrestled for a period of time  because I felt that I was not gifted and inadequate to be a leader. However, during the “School of Leadership” course, I learned from Pastor Raymond Fong that stewardship “is never about how gifted you are as a leader, but it is always about how faithful you are as a steward”.  As I continue to embrace, learn and grow as a steward, I am constantly reminded to lead faithfully with love, humility, commitment, unity and excellence in service to our Lord.

Today’s readings also remind me of how the Holy Spirit prompted me to act. About nine months after being baptized in 2015, I was on a family holiday in Hong Kong. On Christmas Day, as I headed back to the hotel after my morning run, I came across a homeless man in a subway crossing. My heart felt heavy and I was strongly prompted to get some food and drink which I left for him as he slept under layers of blankets. My heart felt burdened with sadness by the circumstances of this homeless man. As I continued walking back to the hotel, I suddenly started crying uncontrollably for a few minutes. It was my first encounter of being filled with the Holy Spirit (Micah 3:8).

DO:

I will continue to spend my devotion time seeking God and reading the Bible daily to strengthen and build an intimate relationship with God.

I will continue learning to be sensitive and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit and the Bible to guide me through my life.

PRAY:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for sending me the Holy Spirit to guide me to walk the narrow path.  Grant me the strength, obedience and discipline to remain faithful and steadfast in my daily walk with You so as not submit to any worldly temptations.  I pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
