Gaining Peace From Listening To God

BRD REFLECTION 2025

2 Chronicles 9:1-31 and Psalm 85:1-13 (NIV)

(Ryan Lim from Disciple and Nurture Ministry)

READ:

It was Psalm 85: 8 that called out to me,  “I will hear what God the Lord will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly.”

OBSERVE:

During a recent Companions in Christ (CIC) session on scripture reading, the verse that spoke to me was Acts 8:39: “…so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.” I felt prompted to ask myself, Am I rejoicing? As I ruminated on that, I started to question what I was seeking, what I truly desired that would make me rejoice. I soon realised that what I sought was peace, not an absence of conflict, but more of  a complete peace – shalom. Is a peaceful place of work, community, or home not worth more than gold? How do I go about finding this peace?

Psalm 85:8 was a great reminder that the Lord will speak peace to His people. Hence, to attain true shalom, I need to spend time listening to God.

As it is written in John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Only God can give this shalom that I seek, and it is only by listening to Him speak to me can I gain the peace that leads me to rejoice in Him.

APPLY:

This verse is a timely reminder for me that the Lord is the shalom that I seek in order to be joyful. As I reflect on this, I am reminded that I need to spend time listening to God, not just to pray and share my burdens and desires with Him, but to listen to His responses, for He will speak peace to His people.

DO:

I will spend time daily to wait and hear what the Lord is saying to me after I have prayed.

PRAY:

Lord, thank You for sending me this verse. Help me remember not to just pray and speak to You, but to listen to what You are saying to me as well. Grant me the peace that surpasses all understanding and allow me to rejoice in You again. In Jesus’ most precious name, I pray. Amen.
