When The Urgent Crowds Out The Important

Genesis 25:19-34 and Psalm 87 (NIV)

The verse that especially stood out to me is:
“So Esau despised his birthright.” — Genesis 25:34
What struck me was how Esau traded something of lasting value for an immediate need.
OBSERVE:
Esau was genuinely hungry, and his need was real. Yet in that moment, what he wanted immediately became more important than his birthright.
That made me think about how easily the urgent can crowd out the important.
In the last few months, I have moved from one responsibility to another — Wesley Makan CeleFeast, Fairfield’s 138th Founder’s Day celebrations, MSF Charity Concert Dinner, family and other commitments. These are good and meaningful, but busyness does not always mean I am choosing what matters most.
This is especially significant in a year when Wesley is reminding us to practise Sabbath.
Sabbath reminds me that not everything depends on me, needs to be resolved immediately, or deserves to become most important.
APPLY:
When I care deeply, my instinct is to organise, anticipate, solve and make sure things work very well.
These can be useful gifts, but they can also lead to self-reliance.
The passage challenges me to ask whether I let immediate pressures — deadlines, decisions, events or problems — crowd out what God may be asking me to treasure.
I am learning that stewardship is not always about holding on or ensuring everything turns out as I think it should. Sometimes faithfulness means knowing what to protect, what can wait, what to entrust to others, and what to leave in God’s hands.
In this Year of Sabbath, I sense God reminding me to pause and discern what feels urgent from what is truly important.
DO:
I want to create Sabbath pauses before rushing into the next decision or responsibility.
I want to ask:
What really matters here? What is mine to do, and what do I need to entrust to God?
I also want to remember that surrender is not irresponsibility. It is doing faithfully what is mine without trying to do what belongs to God.
PRAY:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that not everything urgent is important, and not everything depends on me.
Teach me to pause, listen and recognise what has lasting value. Help me steward well what You have entrusted to me, knowing when to act, wait, let go, and trust others.
Teach me to rest in Your sufficiency, not in my own ability to hold everything together.
