Intelligible Words

BRD REFLECTIONS

1 Corinthians 14 and Psalm 76 (NIV)

(Lucas Chow, Steward, LCEC)

READ:

1 Corinthians 14 and Psalm 76 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

1 Corinthians 14:6 – “Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?”

1 Corinthians 14:8 – “Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?”

APPLY:

As a new Christian I was terrified the first time when I saw people speaking and praying in tongues. And there wasn’t anyone to interpret them or explain to me what was happening.

In 1 Corinthians 14:18-19 Paul said he spoke in tongues more than the people he addressed in the letter. And he said he “would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.”

In the same way, I think sharing my BRD reflection has some similarities. Rather than have the reader read a few hundred meaningless words, wouldn’t it be better if there can be a few words that can be helpful to them? What good will it be if it is not strengthening, encouraging, and comforting to the one who reads it?

With that in mind, I struggled in writing this reflection, trying to discern what God wants me to write so that the readers will be strengthened, encouraged and comforted?

As I prayed and trusted God to lead me in writing the reflection, I realised the simple fact that every word I put down is God enabled. He gave me the ability to read, think, and type. He reminded me of the many answered prayers. And even a seemingly dry spell can be turned into something good. This is what I should share!

DO:

  1. I shall remember communication should be simple and easy to understand. A few intelligible words are better than many words that no one knows.
  2. I must trust in God, even when my faith is small.

PRAY:

Dear God,

Thank you for helping me in writing this reflection. I pray that my sharing will strengthen those whose trust in You is wavering, encourage those who need encouragement, and comfort those who feel they are alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
