Where Sorrow Leads Us

BRD REFLECTION 2026

2 Corinthians 7 and Psalm 34:15-22 (NIV)

(Matthew Peter, Pastoral Team)

READ:

2 Corinthians 7:10 (NIV) “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”

Psalm 34:18 (NIV) “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

OBSERVE:

In 2 Corinthians 7, sorrow has a direction and the choice is always mine to make. One leads me away from God; the other leads me into the very nearness of God.  Godly sorrow leads me toward God through repentance, renewal, and rescue. It draws me into His presence. Worldly sorrow, on the other hand, leads me away into distraction, despair, and ultimately, death.

Psalm 34:15–22 echoes this beautifully. God watches over the righteous, hears their cries, stays near to the broken-hearted, and rescues them from every affliction. Even when troubles multiply, He redeems and protects those who take refuge in Him.

APPLY:

This truth confronts me personally. My sorrow often becomes worldly. It places me in a mindset of lack, that I am not good enough, not holy enough. I see my repeated failures and begin to believe that God does not want someone like me. This kind of sorrow distracts me from God’s voice. It leads me into despair that whispers I’m beyond help, and into a spiritual distance that feels like death.

But when I choose the other direction, everything shifts.

I am not in lack—He is more than enough.
I am not uncovered—I am clothed in His righteousness.
I am not abandoned—He keeps lifting me, even when I keep stumbling.

His kindness leads me to repentance. It turns me back to Him and into His rescue.

Psalm 34 reminds me: He is near to the broken-hearted. He does not withdraw from the crushed; He draws closer. Every affliction is not rejection; it is His invitation.

DO:

When sorrow arises over sin, failure, or pain, I will pause and ask:

Where is this leading me?
Toward distraction, despair, and death?
Or toward repentance, renewal, and rescue?

I will cry out to Him, confess quickly, turn from what grieves Him, and trust His nearness to deliver and restore. I refuse to let shame or despair keep me at a distance. I will run toward the One who is close to the broken-hearted and let every sorrow become a step closer to Him.

PRAY:

Lord, thank You that Your sorrow leads me toward repentance, redemption, and restoration, not toward distraction, despair, and death. Turn every sorrow into a path that draws me closer to Your restoring presence. Guide my heart away from despair and toward You in true repentance. Amen.
