In Awe Of God Who Dwells With Us

BRD REFLECTION 2025

2 Chronicles 5:1-14; 6:1-42 and Psalm 83:1-18 (NIV)

(Timothy Ho, Associate Pastoral Team Member)

READ:

For today, I focused on the passages in 2 Chronicles. The verses that struck me most were Chapter 6: 18 and 19: “But will God indeed dwell with man on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built! Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O LORD my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you.”

OBSERVE:

Despite having undergone incredible effort to employ thousands of skilled workers and having acquired very large quantities of construction material and precious stones to build the temple for God, Solomon is acutely aware that all of it pales in comparison to the greatness and glory of God.

He recognizes that the temple built with the most earnest of effort cannot contain the great God of heaven. He knows that it is God’s prerogative to grace Israel with His presence by dwelling in the house that they had built.

Then, Solomon adopts a posture of humility as he presents his earnest intercessions and pleas to God in the temple.

APPLY:

As I stand on this side of the cross, after Christ has done away with the old sacrificial temple system from Old Testament times, I am once again in awe of how God, in all His glorious majesty, chose to come and dwell amongst men on earth in Jesus Christ.

Also, at Pentecost, God gave the Holy Spirit to all believers. I am reminded of what a glorious honor it is that God would choose to dwell in me! In this, I am encouraged of my worth in God’s sight, and yet I tremble in reverence at that reality.

DO:

In recognition of God’s immense greatness, I want to adopt Solomon’s posture of humility in the way I come into His presence through prayer and present my pleas to him.

PRAY:

Great God of heaven, I thank You for sending Jesus to be Immanuel, God with us, and to save me from my sin. I praise You for giving Your very presence in us through Your Holy Spirit. It is a great honour and privilege. Help me not to take this for granted, and keep me humble in my posture whenever I come before You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
