God’s Blessed King
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Genesis 5 and Psalm 72:15-20 (NIV)

Psalm 72 (ESV)
These verses stood out to me:
May prayer be made for him continually,and blessings invoked for him all the day! (v15b)
May people be blessed in him,all nations call him blessed! (v17b)
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things. (v18)
OBSERVE:
The psalmist writes this psalm with such praise for the king. It is such high praise, and a demand for prayer to be made continually for the king. It becomes such a huge highlight and it is obvious the respect and honour the psalmist has for the king.
APPLY:
I struggle to imagine a situation where I would pray blessings like this on any earthly ruler. Perhaps as part of modern democracy, I am encouraged to vote for the leaders who would bring blessing for me. However, this psalm takes the King’s own merit, and prays blessing for the king, and the people under the king’s rule. Because through this, God is also praised, and blessed for the wondrous deeds He has done. Thank God for installing the king, and for giving the king necessary favour and blessings!
DO:
I would like to pray for my country’s leaders and seek God’s blessing on their lives, even if I do not understand how their policies might benefit me. I pray for a change of perspective, for God to be the main aim of my life, including the leaders of the country and the world. I hope to remember that God is indeed the goal, and the fruition of my life and ministry.
I also remember that I can pray for a good king, and trust that God will install His chosen king. It might not be one that I agree with, but I will learn to be content with God’s plans.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, please forgive me for my self seeking even in leadership. May I submit to You, and pray for my leaders. May You bless them, and through that, may more of the world know of You and Your miracles. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
