What Has God Done For Me?
BRD REFLECTION 2025
Revelation 4 and Psalm 124 (NIV)
(Andrew Tong from Small Group Ministry)
READ:
Psalm 124:1 – If the Lord had not been on our side…
Psalm 124:8 – Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
OBSERVE:
Psalm 124: 1 – is a rhetorical question asked by the Psalmist of Israel, which he answers in the rest of the Psalm. His conclusion in verse 8 is emphatic, declaring that God, the Maker of heaven and earth is surely their help.
APPLY:
I had a conversation with a random pre-believer at Starbucks recently and as we discussed God and church, she asked me what God has done for me. Psalm 124:1 reminded me of that conversation and had me thinking hard about what would life be like if I were not a believer and made me consider again how I would have answered that question about what God has done for me as a believer in Christ.
So what if I were not a believer and the Lord is not on my side? I firmly believe I would lead a life without much purpose, chasing only after thingst to fulfil my own pleasure, my own satisfaction and my own desires. A hedonist, so to speak.
I have the privilege of being added to a prayer group for a family praying for a sister who has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that has spread. Despite the dire prognosis, I can see from their prayers that this is a family that truly believes they have God on their side. They share their prayers daily without fail for this sister, asking, claiming healing.
As a Christian, I have the assurance that God is on my side. He gives me purpose, meaning in life. I also know clearly that the personal and work successes that I may have attained are only because He has been on my side and given me much favour. He has surely watched over me and carried me through and is still carrying me through life, in spite of myself. With God on my side, I know that I can go to Him and ask for things that may seem impossible. I can trust the Maker of heaven and earth to be my help, both in times of trouble and of peace.
DO:
I will sit down with God regularly, seek Him and engage with Him over His will for my life. I will also learn to share the burden of others and to be able to pray for their needs, not just my own.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, my creator, thank You for being on my side, watching over me in all areas of my life all these years. Please continue to watch over me as I stumble along in life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
