What Does It Take To Honour God?

READ:
2 Chronicles 1:1-17; 2:1-18 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
2 Chronicles 1 records how Solomon honoured God with an abundance of sacrifices and prayer. When asked what God should give him, Solomon requested for wisdom. So God granted him knowledge and wisdom but also unparalleled riches, possessions and honour.
2 Chronicles 2 records how Solomon prepared to build a temple for God that “will be great, for our God is greater than all gods” (v5). The chapter details the manpower needed: those who carried, those who mined the raw materials, those who supervised, etc. Solomon even requested help from a foreign king to get him skilled craftsmen and high-quality woods.
Such was his devotion to God. Solomon considered every detail of the building, and had a good understanding that what he was building was but a place to make offerings to God in, as “heaven, even the highest heaven, cannot contain him” (v6).
APPLY:
Two questions I asked myself: firstly, if I were given a wish list, would I be like Solomon, cognizant of what to wish for that would honour God, or would I ask for the sky? Secondly, is every decision I make as a child of God like the one that Solomon made with the intention to honour Him, to elevate Him, based on an understanding of who He is and what He deserves?
Two assurances I discern: firstly, our God loves us so much He gives more than what we wish for or deserve. Secondly, I will never be able to give God anything matching His stature, grace and mercy but I CAN do my best to give Him the best of my ability and giftings to honour Him, knowing He really deserves the best.
DO:
I will learn to ask God to grant me what He knows is useful and beneficial for me, not what I think I need, want or must have. I need to daily deny these to listen for His will for me, and to obey it once I hear and understand it. I will strive to weave the narrative of praise for God’s greatness into my speech, thoughts and action like Solomon did. How do I do this? By keeping close to Him and reading His Word intently.
PRAY:
Our Father in Heaven, forgive me when I want my life to go my way, not Yours. Instruct me to put You at the centre of my ministry, and give You my best, for Your sake, not mine nor the church’s. Your word is full with commandments, injunctions and directions on how to live life befitting the people You sent Your Yon to save. Teach me to heed them. Amen.
