What A Mighty King I Serve!

BRD REFLECTIONS:

2 Samuel 20:1-26; 21:1-22 and Psalm 74 (NIV)

(Michael Chan, PTM Missions)

READ:

Psalm 74 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Psalm 74 deals with the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians.  It opens with a cry of despair, a plea and a prayer for God’s help in great sorrow.

Have you ever felt as though God was far away and that your prayers took a long time to be answered? Have you questioned God, “Why?” or “Why me?” Have you ever doubted God, His love for you or even your own salvation?

Psalm 74:12 “But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth” marks the turning point in the psalmist’s experience as he lifted his eyes by faith from the burning ruins to God who reigns and saves!

As he reviewed the former mighty deeds of God, he confessed his faith and trust in Yahweh as King with great power! The same God who divided the sea by His strength can save His people. Truly, we worship a mighty God who is patient with us and understands us completely!

Finally, he asked God to act not only out of compassion for His people, but also out of concern for His glory and His covenant, to rebuke the foolish man who reproached Him daily.

APPLY:

Even when God seems far away, I must still go to God and pray as the Psalmist.  God never forgets me as His child.  He is right beside me, faithfully keeping watch over my life.

Whenever I feel forgotten or overwhelmed by circumstances, I must focus on God, recall His great acts in Biblical history and my life, and trust that He will act according to His perfect plans and timing.

When I go through trials, I can ask my King who reigns for help, knowing that He hears my prayers and will intervene according to His will.

DO:

When the outlook is hopeless and bleak, I must look up to my mighty God and King who is at work in my life.

PRAY:

Heavenly Father, forgive me whenever I doubt You and become impatient while waiting for You to act. Thank You that I can trust in You and Your Word as You are a good and faithful God, who will never leave me or forsake me.  Help me not to just look at circumstances, but to look to You always, my great and mighty King!
In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.
