Jesus’ First Miracle: From Predicament To Purpose
BRD REFLECTIONS:
(Esther Wong, Asst Zone Leader, SGM Leader)
READ:
John 2:1-11 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
After an initial gathering of His first disciples, this passage describes the first miracle that Jesus performed at a wedding celebration in Cana, Galilee – where the wine ran out for the guests. Mary, the mother of Jesus, told the servants to do as Jesus instructed. The six waterpots could fill volumes up to 20-30 gallons (equivalent to 75-114 litres) per piece, meant for ritual purification. The water-turned-wine was brought to the master of the feast who identified it as of superior quality and complimented the bridegroom for his generous gesture. This miraculous act was witnessed by Jesus’ first disciples, mother, the servants etc., and His disciples believed in Him.
APPLY:
At the time of this reading and reflection, a couple from my small group was getting married and friends were excitedly helping out with the Church wedding preparations. It dawned upon me that I was witnessing a new marriage covenant, a form of God’s divine gift of His grace and love. Over and above all that we can plan to pan out in our lives, I should not lose sight that God is my Provider, in the good and not-so-good situations in which our strength, ability, resources or hope might run out.
DO:
More often, I become self-reliant, striving and restless in my predicaments; rather than being God-dependent, thriving and rested in Him. From this reflection, I am encouraged to call upon the name of Jesus and renew my covenant belief in Him. I desire to believe in God’s miracles in these times. In any situation, even adverse ones, I am hopeful to look to Jesus, follow His instructive words (the Bible) and guidance, trust in His all-knowing & divine timing to lead me towards a purity (consecration) of heart, rely on His providence to fulfil His purpose in and through me.
PRAY:
Abba Father, into Your Hands, I commit again, with all I am, for You, Lord. May I be strengthened in the resurrection power of Christ through the leading of the Holy Spirit, that I will be rooted and abide in the love of Christ that surpasses all knowledge and rationale, that overcomes the fear of lack, a conviction of heart, to be filled with the fullness of God. Guide me to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly in God. Keep my footsteps firm in Your truths. In Christ’s Almighty name, Amen.
