Life’s Two Roads
BRD REFLECTION 2025
Ecclesiastes 8 and Psalm 1 (NIV)
(Matthew Peter, Prayer & Praise Pastoral Staff)
READ:
Ecclesiastes 8:5 and Psalm 1:6 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Life constantly places us at crossroads where we must choose between what is easy and what is right; what is temporary and what is eternal. One is shaped by obedience and wisdom, the other by self-will and compromise.
The road of the righteous may not always be smooth, but it is watched over by God. It brings peace, clarity, and purpose. The road of the wicked often looks quicker, more comfortable, and more rewarding in the moment, but it is ultimately unstable, unsatisfying and leads to ruin.
What sets these two roads apart is not just the directions, but the inner posture of the heart. One listens for God’s voice and trusts His timing, it meditates and waits. The other listens only to itself.
APPLY:
In life, choices must be made. Sometimes I make decisions based on familiarity with the situation; other times, I take longer to assess the situation, come to what I think is a logical conclusion, and then make the decision. Often, I find that decisions that are less public, place me at a crossroads between what is right and what is merely convenient.
It is easy for me to underestimate these moments: choosing honesty when a lie would be easier, showing kindness instead of sarcasm, and saying no when others say yes. Each time, I am invited to choose between two roads: the road of righteousness, walked by faith; and the road of compromise, led by self.
DO:
I will remember the words of Ecclesiastes 8:5, that wisdom requires me to recognise the choice that will please God and choose it even if it comes at personal cost, knowing that God knows the way of the righteous and walks with me even in the small, quiet choices.
PRAY:
Lord, I come to You today in stillness, meditating on Your words. Quiet my heart and help me to slow down long enough to listen to Your voice. I want to walk the path that pleases You. I confess that too often I have chosen what is easy over what is right and leaned on my own understanding instead of waiting for Your direction. Forgive me and give me a heart that desires Your ways. In the name of Christ Jesus I pray, Amen.
